Color Practice For Toddlers

Learning colors with your toddler has never been more fun or simple. Teach colors with items you already have around the house!

Looking for a simple activity to help your toddler learn their colors? Here is an activity you can do right now!

  • Grab colored paper! We wrote the color names on construction paper and laminated them for easy-to-use cards for the future!
  • Don’t have colored construction paper on hand? That’s okay! Anything single-colored will work! Try folding flat shirts, using the back of books, or coloring a section on white paper.
  • Gather colored manipulatives. We used old baby food packet lids that we collected over time!
  • But if you don’t have them, use things you have around the house like: m&m’s, dry cereal, toy pieces, legos, Barbie shoes, play food… anything that has multiple of the same color.
  • Have your child match the colored pieces to the correct color section.
  • They don’t have to be perfect at it! This is practice! The way you help them problem solve and correct their mistakes is more important than actually getting the color right!

Simple right? No! It is SO much more than that.

Yes, it was such an easy activity to put together that keeps your kid occupied and engaged… but there is so much more happening in their minds.

Here are a few of the learning connections going on in your toddler:

  • Development of fine motor skills.
  • Concentration and critical thinking practice.
  • Ability to problem solve.
  • Sense of self-development.
  • Notice similarities and differences.
  • Learn to categorize and organize.
  • Early literacy development (when color names are written on cards).
  • Matching and sorting skills.
  • Identify patterns and relationships.

And these are just a few!!!!

Remember, everything your child does connect to their learning!
